The Trustnet Community

Developing the next evolutionary stage of the Internet sounds like an extremely large task. However, everything must start small; every great innovation needs pioneers, and we are not starting the Trustnet initiative from scratch. The starting point for the Trustnet Community is the ID-Ideal project, which was funded with €15 million by the BMWK in the showcase program "Secure Digital Identities1." The project runs until October 2024. As part of this showcase project, the potential of Verifiable Credentials in connection with the principle of Self-Sovereign Identities (SSI) was examined and demonstrated in application scenarios within local government, industry, mobility, and commerce. With the involvement of participants from three other simultaneously funded showcase projects and accompanying research, the Trustnet vision formulated in ID-Ideal, as well as the roadmap for its implementation, was further developed and concretized. Thus, the initial Trustnet Community does not only consist of the 15 partners and 26 associated partners of the ID-Ideal project2. It also has a nationwide network that includes the 40 direct and 79 associated partners of the three BMWK showcase projects IDunion3, ONCE4, and SDIKA5, as well as the numerous actors in the Blockchain Showcase Region Mittweida6, funded by the BMBF.

The unique technological feature of the existing community is its pioneering role in the development and implementation of Trustnet applications and the associated data infrastructure, including related product and service innovations. Overall, the SDI showcase program is the world's largest R&D community in the field of "Digital Trust". In particular, ID-Ideal, as the Saxon showcase, has significantly advanced the development of the Trustnet vision, Trustnet roadmap, and scientific-technical foundations. Based on this R&D community, it is now necessary to form an innovation community and bring applications across a wide thematic spectrum "to the streets." This Trustnet Community must integrate ministries, offices, and authorities, IT service providers, users from the economy, interest groups, and civil society actors, as well as the citizens who play a crucial role in testing broadly impactful applications. Become part of this community and help us shape the next stage of evolution for the Internet!
